Dairy Free Dining at Disney World
When I found myself with a sudden onset of severe lactose intolerance in my mid-30’s, I was devastated to be honest. Cheese is life, am I right?! After the initial struggle to figure out what foods contain dairy (spoiler alert: it’s a lot!), I got comfortable with how to avoid dairy while making choices for both cooking and dining out. Luckily, when you are a guest at the Walt Disney World Resort, all dietary concerns are taken very seriously. They handle everything from ordering to preparation and labeling of the food coming to you. In fact, a chef will personally come speak to you at any counter service or table service dining location. They prepare all meals with allergies or restrictions in a completely different kitchen, away from all the common allergens. Contamination with dairy would result in serious discomfort for me, but for those with food allergies, this literally could risk their life and livelihood. Disney takes allergies very seriously! You can rest assured that when a Cast Member brings your food, it will be safe from whatever it is you need to avoid while dairy free dining at Disney World.
Most of the new QR code menus already include allergy menus, but if you don’t see one, feel free to ask a Cast Member. On my recent trip to Disney, I had a lot of dairy-free meals that quickly became favorites!
This dairy-free Land & Sea skillet option at Whispering Canyon at Wilderness Lodge was so yummy: Salmon, Roasted Chicken, plant based “sausage”, roasted red potatoes, sautéed carrots and green beans. I even had my own dairy free cornbread and butter. It was delicious!
At California Grill, the Spicy Kazan Sushi Roll was an obvious (already dairy-free) choice: Crab, scallops, tuna and fireball sauce. So good! For my entree I chose the Black Grouper with Herb Basmati rice, cashew chutney, bok choy, baby shiitake, and kaffir lime-coconut nage. It too was already dairy-free as prepared.
Even at Liberty Tree Tavern, where colonial-style home cooked meals are served up “all you care to enjoy”, I got my own dairy-free platter, complete with everything that everyone else had: Roasted turkey breast with gravy, pot roast, oven-roasted pork, mashed potatoes, herb stuffing and a cranberry sauce subbed in for the mac and cheese. They even had 2 dairy-free options for dessert: the Johnny Appleseed warm apple cake and strawberry sorbet.
We can’t forget snacks at Disney! My most favorite dairy- free snacks (aside from a Mickey pretzel) can be found at a little stand in Animal Kingdom called Mr. Kamal’s. They have only 2 offerings but you want to try them both: Mr. Kamal’s Seasoned Fries, which come with 2 dipping sauces: tandoori honey mustard and honey kimchi ketchup. The Chicken Dumplings are fried and served with a ponzu sauce for dipping. Oh so yummy!
Having a dietary issue at Disney is really about as easy and stress-free as is possible. Kudos to all the amazing Cast Members who go above and beyond each day to help out with guests who have dietary restrictions. Thinking about planning your own dairy-free adventure to Disney World?
