Sick at Disney World, Here's what to do
We have been planning your trip to Walt Disney World® Resort together for months, weeks, maybe even years! The relief you feel when you're finally on your Disney adventure is palpable. But then, the unimaginable happens: someone gets sick at Disney World! What do you do?Sadly, my family has had first-hand experience with this. Young kids and germs go together like Mickey & Minnie, so it's only natural to assume that at some point, someone could get sick. Hopefully, this won't ever be a reality for you and your family. But just in case, it's always best to be prepared!
If You Get Sick In The Parks
First, don't panic! If you need assistance, seek out a Cast Member. They are there to help! If you or someone with you is experiencing a life threatening emergency, immediately call 911 and alert the nearest Cast Member. Did you know the 4 theme parks, both water parks, and Disney Springs each have a First Aid station, with a licensed nurse staffed during regular hours? Utilize their expertise if you need it! They not only have first aid items on hand, but also have many over-the-counter medications available as samples, to dispense as needed. Think: acetaminophen, ibuprofen, Benadryl, Imodium, etc. The nurse can take your temperature, do an assessment, and get you a list of urgent care or pharmacy facilities nearby. Even if you just need some advice, these trained professionals are there for you! Consult a park map, or ask any Cast Member to help you with directions.
Second, please leave the parks if you're ill. It's really difficult for you and your family to "feel the Magic" if you're running for the bathroom every 10 minutes, or have a fever. Not to mention, you could be spreading germs to the rest of your family, other Guests and Cast Members, and no one wants to be on the receiving end of that! As hard as it is to leave, you'll feel so much better away from the crowds.
At Your Resort
Call the front desk and let them know what is going on. If you're in need of extra linens, an extra cleaning of your bathroom, ginger ale, anything at all, don't be afraid to ask! When my 8 year old fell ill with tummy troubles, I brought her back to our room to rest while my hubby stayed in the park with our other 2 girls. I called the front desk, and the Cast Member I spoke with was so helpful! They had new linens, bottles of water and cans of ginger ale up to us in no time. If you have need of a doctor, and it's not an emergency, your front desk Cast Members can help. They have the name, location and hours of the nearest urgent care facilities. Complimentary transportation may be available. The Cast Members also have contact information for on-call doctors who can make "house calls" to the Walt Disney World® Resort. If you have health insurance, and your company participates, another option is to use the Virtual Visits via your phone, tablet or laptop. I have used this service while on vacation with great results. Again, if you experience a life-threatening emergency, and need immediate medical attention, always call 911 immediately.
What About My Dining And Other Reservations?
If you are sick at Disney World, get in touch with your Royal Treatment Travel® Planner. We will do our best to help with cancelling or moving dining reservations, Fastpasses, and any other appointments or reservations. Sometimes, seeking out Guest Services is your best bet. If there is an issue we as your Travel Planner aren’t able to resolve, we will direct you to, as soon as you're able, give them a call or visit them in person to explain what is going on.
What If I Miss My Park Days?
Contact Guest Services. Once you are checked-in to your Resort, Disney transfers your reservation into their internal system, and we as Travel Planners cannot access or modify any tickets or hotel reservations. While it may not be possible to make up for all your lost park days, the Cast Members at Guest Services will do all they can to try to make the rest of your stay as enjoyable as possible. Keep in mind, if you have a non-expiring ticket (almost all packages and tickets purchased through Disney), and do not actually enter a park (scan your MagicBand or ticket) for any number of days, those unused days don't expire for 14 days from your first park day. If shifting your park days forward a day or two is possible (you probably don't want to use that rest/pool day now!), explore that option. Flexibility is important here!
Hopefully you won't experience illness on your next trip to see Mickey, but in case you do get sick at Disney World, now you're prepared. Wishing you all safe and healthy travels! If you need further medical care while sick at Disney World, here is a list of Urgent Care and ER Facilities:
